چکیده
During the period 22 November 1999 -11 October 2001, winter hibernacula surveys, spring staging/autumn swarming surveys, and summer surveys for bats were completed in caves of Skydusky Hollow, Bland County, Virginia. During winter, 12 caves were entered and 16,185 bats counted: 235 Myotis soda/is (Indiana bat), 14,475 Myotis lucifugus (little brownmyotis), 12 Myotis septentrionalis (northern myotis), 7 Myotis leibii (eastern small-footed myotis), 1,441 Pipistrellus subflavus (eastern pipistrelle), and 15 Eptesicus fuscus (big brown bat). Myotis soda/is hibernated in thermally stable areas of 7 9°C. The largest concentration of M lucifugus (n = 4,280) hibernated in an area that was cooler (6.5°C) than areas used by M soda/is. The remaining 6,300 M lucifugus hibernated at temperatures similar to, or slightly cooler than, temperatures used by M soda/is. Intra-cave (and possibly inter-cave) movements of M lucifugus and M soda/is during the season of hibernation concentrated bats in cooler areas of the caves. An unusually large concentration of P. subjlavus (n = 920) hibernated in Coon Cave in a warm (8.6 9.7°C), stable environment. Proportions of species of bats captured during spring staging and autumn swarming varied from proportions found during winter hibernation. Mating and perhaps other social functions affect patterns of autumn use. No concentration of bats used the caves during

Using vibrational analysis to investigate the batted-ball performance of baseball bats
Hollow nonwood baseball bats have performance advantages over wooden bats. The hollow barrel bats act as a spring or trampoline during the bat-ball collision. The trampoline effect can occur at different natural frequencies known as hoop modes. To examine the effect of the hoop mode on the bat-ball collision, modal analysis and performance measurements were performed on a sample of hollow nonwo...
متن کاملHoop frequency as a predictor of performance for softball bats
Hollow metal and composite baseball and softball bats exhibit two types of vibrational modes, bending modes and hoop modes. The hoop modes are unique to hollow bats and involve only a radial vibration of the barrel of the bat. The lowest frequency hoop mode is responsible for the both the "ping" sound of a metal bat and the so-called "trampoline effect." Modal analysis is used to determine the ...
متن کاملSize discrimination of hollow hemispheres by echolocation in a nectar feeding bat.
Nectar feeding bats use echolocation to find their flowers in the dense growth of tropical rainforests, and such flowers have evolved acoustic features that make their echo more conspicuous to their pollinators. To shed light on the sensory and cognitive basis of echoacoustic object recognition we conducted a size discrimination experiment with the nectarivorous bat Glossophaga soricina and com...
متن کاملBats, viruses, emerging diseases and humans
This paper reviews the unique characteristics of bats, their important roles in providing ecosystem services, their viruses in relation to emerging diseases. Bats, as flying mammals, are the second largest order following rodents, with a wide variety (over 1400 identified species among 230 genera of 21 families in the world) due to their flying power and echolocation. Despite their importance a...
متن کاملNathusius' pipistrelle bats (Pipistrellus nathusii, Keyserling & Blasius 1839) breeding in Ireland
We describe the most westerly known maternity colony of Nathusius' pipistrelle bats (Pipistrellus nathusii). The bats were identi®ed by using morphometric measurements and analysis of time-expanded echolocation and social calls. The roost, containing approximately 150 individuals, was located in a mid 19th century farm stable block and store house situated in parkland in County Antrim, Northern...
